• Week of May 12-May 16, 2008

This is the week of May 12-16, 2008.  We have three fun events coming up this week. . We will go on a field trip to the Natural History Butterfly Exhibit, attend the dress rehearsal of the  2nd grade body play, and  have our last lunch with our 6th grade buddies.

We’ll be reading both fiction and nonfiction literature about another oviparous animal, the frog. We will be reading Frog and Toad  Are Friends.

We hope everyone had a delightful and fun Mother’s Day. I can’t wait to hear about the thoughtful things you did for your mother. I was able to read some of the messages the children wrote to you and I know their words brought tears of joy to all of you fantastic moms.

• Monday

1. Complete pages 52, 53, 56, and 57 in your Reading and Writing book 2. Read all the directions carefully. If it asks you to do more than thing, mark each number of things to do.

2. Pretest tomorrow

3. Read for at least 15 minutes.

• Tuesday

**Congratulations!  You have won the privilege of no homework tonight. You did such an awesome job of selling sweepstakes that you have earned no homework tonight.

• Wednesday

1. Do your best math work on pages 397, 398, 399, and 400. Go back and proof check when you are finished. These pages are test pages at the end of the chapter.

2. Read for at least 15 minutes.

• Thursday

1. Take home the book, Frog and Toad Are Friends. Read the chapter called The Letter. You will then write a letter to Toad because he never gets any mail. What would you say to cheer him up? Be creative and think about what would cheer you up if you wanted mail sent to you.

2. Spelling test tomorrow is a review of all the words you have had in first grade so study your best.

3. Read for at least 15 minutes.

• Friday

1. Spelling test is a review of all the words you have had this year. Be sure to review lists 1-23.

2. Read for at least 15 minutes.

• Special Notes and Comments

Our special events this week are:

Monday - --

Tuesday - - Field trip to Natural History to view Butterfly Exhibit

Wednesday—-- Ice cream party to celebrate winning day of selling sweepstakes’ tickets

Thursday--Last buddy lunch..student store ..2nd grade play for the school

Friday--

Please continue to read every night for at least 15 minutes. Practice is very important to becoming more fluent. Also it is helpful to practice the subtraction facts to 20. If you know the adding to 20, it makes the subtraction facts easier.

The spelling list is a final review list of all the core spelling words in 1st grade. We will devote two weeks to the review of all of our words.

Please remember that spelling is not just on the Friday test. Spelling happens every time you write a word, sentence, or story. If you get all your spelling words correct on the test, but misspell words when you write daily, then you really haven’t truly learned the spelling pattern. Take your time when you study your spelling. If you know the ending or chunk of letters like __ump, you can spell any word that ends with that chunk of letters. You must think about the letters as you spell the words.

Each week you will see this stamp on the spelling test papers:

            ___Spelling

            ___Printing

            ___Punctuation

            ___Capitals

            ___Dictation

Each part of the test is graded and marked on this section. Spelling = the total number of words spelled correctly just out of the list and extra words. Printing=handwriting on the word side as well as the dictation sentences. Punctuation=ending marks  missed at the end of the dictation sentences. Capitals=capital letters in the correct places on the dictation side. Dictation=spelling words spelling correctly on the sentences only. We hope this helps you with the marking. If you have any questions please contact either Mrs. Rigrod or Mrs. Mansfield.

Ms. Fernandez has installed the core 1st grade-spelling list on the web site. Going to the link below can access it from the homework page at anytime throughout the year. This document shows the basic words by weekly lists that the children must learn before going to second grade.  Aside from the basic words, they must know words that are in the same family, such as if lap is the word on the list, they are expected to know-clap-strap.
