Hermes, the Greek messenger god, was
very intelligent. One reason that Hermes was smart was because five minutes
after he was born, he escaped from his crib and went on an adventure. Traveling
through the mountains he even stole ApolloÕs herd of cows. When he stole the
cows, he was smart enough to cover up his tracks so that Apollo would never
know it was Hermes that stole the cows. The second example of Hermes being
keen-minded is that soon after he stole ApolloÕs cows, he went into a cave
where he met a Titaness named Maia. While he was in the cave, he invented the
lyre by making it out of sheep intestines, a turtle shell, and some cowhide.
While walking by a cave, Apollo heard Hermes playing the instrument that he
had just invented. Because Apollo loved the sounds that the lyre made, he demanded that Hermes give the lyre
to him as a gift. In return for his golden staff, Hermes gave Apollo the
lyre. Since the staff was the herdsmenÕs staff, and Apollo was the god of
herdsmen, it was important to him. For the reasons above, Hermes was a clever
god. |
