The dryad
Echo in the tale of ÒEcho and NarcissusÓ was very committed. First of all,
when she spotted the god Zeus flirting with a river nymph, and then his wife
Hera coming to catch him do it, she did not back away and hide from the gods
like most nymphs would in a situation like that. Instead, she stayed where
she was and told Hera a story about how Zeus was looking for her on Mount
Olympus, giving Zeus and the nymph enough time to hide. Echo probably knew
that it was bad to lie to a goddess, but she did it anyway because she was
determined to protect Zeus. Second of all, after Hera had made it so Echo
could only repeat what people said because she lied to her, Echo found the boy
of her dreams, Narcissus. She was dedicated to making him fall in love with
her even though she knew she could not speak with him. Though they could
never converse, she ran out in front of Narcissus and tried to talk to him,
but it was all in vain because she could only repeat what he said. In
conclusion, after protecting Zeus though she knew she would get in trouble
and trying to make Narcissus fall in love with her though she could not
really talk with him, the poor dryad Echo showed that she was committed to
whatever she did. |
