Poseidon, god of the sea, was extremely short-tempered. There are many myths that show his violent temper. In one story, Odysseus blinded and taunted one PoseidonÕs sons, Polyphemos. Odysseus paid dearly. Poseidon could not forgive the insults to his son. Once he saw OdysseusÕs raft in sight of land Poseidon caused a huge storm to rise up and batter OdysseusÕs tiny raft. This story showed PoseidonÕs terrible anger and vengeance. In another story, Poseidon and Athena were competing for the city of Athens. Poseidon threw a spear on the ground and it formed the spring at the Acropolis. Athena gave the people of Athens an olive tree. The people preferred AthenaÕs gift and made her the goddess of the city. There was a story where Poseidon sent a huge sea monster to attack Troy to punish TroyÕs king. All these stories showed PoseidonÕs turbulent temper.
