Fifth and Sixth Grade Math

The goal of the mathematics program is to guide our students to think and to communicate mathematical ideas by using techniques and tools to become mathematically powerful. By the end of sixth grade, students should be able to solve problems, reason, make connections, understand number theory, compute and estimate whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentage, and explore patterns and functions, geometry, algebra, measurement, probability, and statistics.

Our standards conform to the N.C.T.M. guidelines. We use Prentice Hall’s "Middle Grades Mathematics, An Interactive Approach," as well as various supplemental materials to enrich the current curriculum. These materials include computer programs, Continental Math League contests, calculator activities, manipulatives, and games. The students work both independently, in co-operative groups, and as a whole class unit. Assessment tools include tests, math journals, projects, and observations.
