Fifth and Sixth Grade Science

Devil's Punchbowl

Science is taught with a "hands on, minds on" attitude. It is meant to expose students to the joys and excitement of the world around them. JTD School owns several acres of a chaparral canyon where we have four hiking trails and over 50 species of plants. The canyon is home to many animals including deer, coyote, woodrats, lizards, and numerous birds. The canyon is utilized to experience the local ecology and nature on a monthly basis.

Fifth grade science begins by studying our universe and astronomy. There are numerous experiments to teach the scientific method and become familiar with tools and equipment used by scientists. Ecology is studied while hiking on the canyon trails adjacent to our school. The five kingdoms of living organisms are introduced and examined in the class and in the field.

Sixth grade science continues to build upon our knowledge of ecology while studying local plants and animals and integrating local animals into a computer based project. The ten main systems of the human body are examined and studied. Many experiments help develop laboratory skills, curiosity, and a mastery of the metric measurement system.
