Fifth
Grade English
As you open the
door to our fifth
grade English
classroom, you
can hear the quiet
pencil scratches
on smooth white
lined paper as
student thoughtfully
ponder their writing
topic and enthusiastically
write down their
thoughts. On other
days, you might
enter to see and
ocean of hands
in the air as
student excitedly
participate in
our literary discussion.
Whether student
are writing, reading,
or sharing ideas,
we expect them
to put forth their
best efforts,
experience the
joy of reading
and writing, and
learn how to work
cooperatively
with their peers.
The fifth grade
English programs
major focus is
to build on skills
previously taught
as well as to
further them in
the development
of reading and
writing. The goal
of our comprehensive
literature based
program is to
develop reading
comprehension
skills, provide
student with a
variety of genres
to read, and critically
analyze in both
oral and written
forums. In addition,
our process oriented
writing program
includes grammar,
spelling, the
full writing process,
and a school-wide
writing rubric
as an evaluatory
tool. We encourage
our students to
write creatively,
persuasively,
and analytically
for both creative
and expository
writing.
