First Grade

Literature and trade books, both fiction and nonfiction, comprise the core of our reading program. The children are taught various methods of decoding with a strong emphasis on phonics.

Our spelling program is a combination of utilizing phonetic skills as well as sight words. We are part of the school wide writing program that’s been developed that includes instruction in mechanics and grammar as well as emphasis on expression of ideas in written form.

Part of the emphasis of the math program is working toward the mastery of basic arithmetic skills through the use of numerous interactive activities. The use of manipulatives in the program provide a bridge between the symbolic and concrete skills so that these skills can be applied in problem solving situations.

Many of our science and social studies units are integrated into our reading program. One of the highlights of the first grade experience is the Pilgrim and Native American Feast.
