Fourth Grade

During the fourth grade year, our aim is to solidify basic skills while fostering independent thinking and the joy of learning. Fourth graders are encouraged to accept more responsibility and to develop organizational skills in preparation for the departmentalization in fifth and sixth grades.

The major points of focus in the fourth grade curriculum are:
Math- Long division, fractions, decimals, geometry and repeated practice for mastery of the basic skills in number operations.
Reading- Students continue to develop basic reading skills through a comprehensive reading program which includes five literature books, a skills workbook, and the Six Way Paragraph reading comprehension program.
Language Arts- Basic grammar skills are introduced and reinforced. Each child has an individualized weekly spelling list. The fourth grade writing program is based on the Writer's Workshop and the school-wide writing rubrics.
Social Studies- The history and geography of California are studied in depth. A field trip to Sacramento is the culminating activity for the year.
