Performing Arts

Grades 3 - 6

The performing arts program is in part, founded upon the methodology of Carl Orff. Orff Schulwerk is "Music for Children" and interrelated music, movement and speech concept. This is an innovative approach to teaching and learning music based on the ways children naturally communicate. Using their voices to speak, chant and sing and their bodies to move and dance, the children experience the power and potential of intensive learning through total involvement. Within our elementary school setting, our goals are to develop an aesthetic sensitivity within the child and nurture a life long enjoyment and appreciation of music. As they matriculate on to secondary school, they take with them a musical palatte containing music appreciation from classical, Broadway and popular idioms, children’s song repertoire, and basic music theory. Also included within the curriculum is a study of recorders, music history and composers as well as units on opera and rock and roll. In fifth and sixth grades, there is an emphasis on voice training and body awareness to develop self-confidence and poise, also acting as a springboard for interviews, speeches, class presentation and drama productions.

Grades K - 2

The objective is to integrate music into the school’s academic curriculum. Our program provides students with the basic musical skills of listening, singing, dancing, and playing instruments while at the same time enriching the lessons taught in the regular classroom. Music is an educational process as well as a creative one. We believe that it is fundamental to the child's development- intellectually, emotionally, physically and creatively.
