Second
Grade
Second grade builds on the foundation of
the first grade curriculum. Emergent reader skills are enhanced through
the basal reading program in the Open Court Reading series which
is used in First through Fourth grades. These skills are reinforced
and enriched by a core of literature books which include, Harry the
Poisonous Centipede by Lynn Ried Banks and Venus Among the Fishes
by Scott O'Dell. The language arts program continues the development
of communication skills in oral and written language.
The goal of the
mathematics program
is to guide the
students to think
and communicate
mathematical ideas
by using techniques
and tools to become
mathematically
powerful. The
McGraw Hill
series is used
along with enrichment
materials, computer
applications and
manipulatives.
Social Studies
is
taught each week
and integrated
into the rest
of the curriculum.
The main focus in Second Grade is the history of The John Thomas
Dye School and our text is the book Golden Leaves, written by John Thomas
Dye's mother, Cathryn Dye. ln addition we cover the themes of the westward
movement and immigration. Science is taught twice in a week by Ms. Won. They
work in a science specific classroom where the students get many opportunities
for hands on learning. Themes covered include Insects and Whales. Specialists
assist the class teacher in achieving the goals of the curriculum. The students
have P.E., Library, Music, Art and Technology. We are committed to service
learning at JTD and in Second Grade our focus is on the environment, particularly
the ocean. We adopt a beach and commit to cleaning it three times a year.
