Third
Grade
Students in third grade learn how to read
and respond to a variety of literary selections including realistic
fiction, historical fiction, fables and fairy tales, poetry, and
non-fiction. They acquire strategies for accessing information and
exploring concepts from many sources of knowledge through discussion,
writing, and research. By exploring concepts of universal interest,
such as: friendship, country life, imagination,and story telling,
our students build knowledge through their reading.
Individual and
group projects
increase student
knowledge in science
and social studies.
Third graders
study arachnids, forensics,
and motion, as
well as, United
States geography,
Native Americans,
and Los Angeles, the city we live in.
Students acquire
knowledge of writing
conventions by
reading and examining
good writing.
Prewriting, drafting,
revising, editing,
and publishing
allow our students
to expand upon
these abilities
and to become
better writers.
Spelling leads
students to learn
common characteristics
of the English
language spelling
system. In addition,
students personalize
lists with words
from all curricular
areas.
Mathematics is
an important part
of our daily lives.
Third graders
practice basic
number facts to
improve speed
and accuracy and
the ability to
work in
your head.
Daily computation
in addition, subtraction,
multiplication,
and division increases
understanding.
Children are encouraged
to analyze data
to discover patterns
and draw conclusions.
Problem solving
skills and strategies
are developed
and practiced.
