Third Grade

Students in third grade learn how to read and respond to a variety of literary selections including realistic fiction, historical fiction, fables and fairy tales, poetry, and non-fiction. They acquire strategies for accessing information and exploring concepts from many sources of knowledge through discussion, writing, and research. By exploring concepts of universal interest, such as: friendship, country life, imagination, and story telling, our students build knowledge through their reading.

Individual and group projects increase student knowledge in science and social studies. Third graders study arachnids, forensics, and motion, as well as, United States geography, Native Americans, and Los Angeles, the city we live in.

Students acquire knowledge of writing conventions by reading and examining good writing. Prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing allow our students to expand upon these abilities and to become better writers.

Spelling leads students to learn common characteristics of the English language spelling system. In addition, students personalize lists with words from all curricular areas.

Mathematics is an important part of our daily lives. Third graders practice basic number facts to improve speed and accuracy and the ability to work in your head. Daily computation in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division increases understanding. Children are encouraged to analyze data to discover patterns and draw conclusions. Problem solving skills and strategies are developed and practiced.
