Western Banded Gecko

Coleonyx variegatus

  • After eating, it cleans its face with its tongue.

  • Fat stored in the tail can keep it alive for nine months.

  • When defending its territory, the males squeak and chirp.

At the DevilŐs Punchbowl, I saw a small Western Banded Gecko in the visitorsŐ center. A lot of the time it was sleeping, but when it was awake I could pet it.

My favorite part of the field trip was how I got to touch and hold some live animals. I got to hold a kestrel, pet an owl, and see lots of snakes.
