Salutation to the Dawn

Each morning, before classes start, the entire student body and faculty gather on the lawn by class to say "The Pledge of Allegiance." As we look out from our hill, over the city of Los Angeles and all the way to the Pacific Ocean, we raise our arms to the sun and we recite "The Salutation of the Dawn," from the Sanskrit. As we say this ancient poem, we think of this day and try to make it the best we can. Back to top

Listen to the Exhortation of the Dawn!
Look to this Day!
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course lie all the verities
And realities of your existence:
The glory of action,
The bliss of growth,
The splendor of beauty,
For yesterday is just a dream,
And tomorrow is only a vision;
But today well lived, makes
Every yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this Day!
Such is the Salutation of the Dawn.

Brother Sister Program

This program matches up sixth graders with first graders in the fall. Throughout the school year they are brothers and sister to each other; looking out for each other, sometimes eating lunch together and sharing recess, exchanging gifts at holidays and always writing letters to each other. It delights the first graders to get such attention from their "big" sixth graders, and the sixth graders glow when their little brother or sister runs up to them to give them a hug. Back to top
Music for Lunch Bunch

One Friday a quarter the gym turns into a cabaret to display students' many talents. We call our show "Music for Lunch Bunch." The remainder of the student body, faculty, and staff eat their lunch while being entertained by our performers. Acts may include dancing, playing a musical instrument, singing, and even lip-syncing to a favorite song. Individuals or groups may participate. The show's master of ceremonies is a group of sixth graders. Once a quarter we are reminded how multi-talented our student body really is. Back to top

The Sixth Grade Play

Parents, friends, and students gather and watch in awe as the sixth graders display their talents in an original play our music teacher writes, directs, produces, and accompanies. The play runs for two performances in the spring. After weeks of rehearsal, the gym is transformed into a whirlwind of music, voices, dancing and acting. This is an opportunity for each of our sixth graders to shine! Back to top
Sixth Grade Versus Faculty Games

Highly anticipated events here at JTD are the faculty versus the Sixth Grade games. Two times a year the school gathers to watch the sixth graders challenge the faculty in volleyball and softball. Every sixth grader participates by rotating into the game and watching or cheering from the sidelines. At the end of the game, the sixth graders get a treat from the faculty for being such good sports. Usually the faculty wins, but some years the sixth graders actually come out ahead. The sixth graders can't wait till they face off with the faculty! s Back to top
The Fair Spirit Day

Spirit Day is the Friday before our Fair in May. It is a festive day when we dress in our fair t-shirts and shorts, instead of our usual uniform. Just before lunch the student body assembles on the lawn to witness a skit putting us in the fair mood. We get a glimpse of what we will do at the fair, games to be played, prizes to be won and food to be eaten. The names of the top fifty raffle ticket selling students are announced and thrown in to a hat. In a suspense-filled drawing, one student is chosen to be Headmaster for a day sometime after the Fair. We are dismissed early to go home and rest up for the Fair on Sunday. Oh yes, and to let the parents set the fair up! Back to top
