Admissions Process

Policy & Procedure

Applicants for admission are accepted one year prior to the student's enrollment. Please fill out the inquiry form as found online and we will respond to your inquiry. You may also contact our admissions office by phone or email for information. We limit the number of Kindergarten applications we process to 70 boys and 70 girls. Applications for Kindergarten admission are considered on a first come basis beginning September 21, 2018. At this time we have closed the Kindergarten applicant pool having reached our limit. First through Sixth grade applications, are accepted through winter break and are limited depending on the number of projected openings we will have at each grade level, the time constraints of conducting individual evaluations of each student, and the number of siblings and legacies to be considered.

Siblings of present students and children of those legacy families who have sustained a positive relationship with our school since graduating will be given preference once they have met the admissions requirements. In addition, the school's policy states that it may accept up to 40% new families in Kindergarten.

If you have just found out you are moving to Los Angeles or if you have any questions, please feel free to call the admissions office for information.

Girls must meet the five year old age requirement by September 1, 2019.
Boys must meet the five year old age requirement by June 1, 2019.

  • Evaluations

Admission to The John Thomas Dye School is decided by a thorough assessment of the child's developmental readiness, academic ability, previous school record, and performance on testing administered at our school.

School-developed evaluations are used for Kindergarten. First through Fourth grade applicants will complete their testing when they come on Saturday, February 23, 2019, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Fifth and Sixth grade applicants must submit results of ISEE standardized testing.

Registration for these can be found at www.iseetest.org at least 3 weeks prior to the testing date. The John Thomas Dye School's code is 054003. Tests can be taken at any test site. These assessments are given to determine the applicant’s readiness and ability to achieve success in our program when compared to the students presently attending our school.

We also require a teacher recommendation and student records from the present school for Kindergarten through Sixth grade candidates.

Group screenings for Kindergarten applicants will be offered on five Saturdays in December, January or February. We have scheduled evaluations on December 8, January 12, January 26, February 2, and February 9. There are four sessions each Saturday. These are held at 8:30 a.m., 9:45 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Once in the applicant pool, please check with other schools to see when they need to see your child, then, call us to arrange the time and date you would prefer.

While the children work with our teachers, parents are invited to stay on campus for a question and answer session with Rose Helm, our Head of School and Haley Roberts, our Director of Curriculum.

Siblings of present students will be evaluated on Saturday, November 17, 2018.
